The fall of 1918 was a point of capital crisis within the German government (a parliamentary- or civil monarchy, under the house of Hohenzollern).
The commanding generals — who had been running Germany’s end within the European war — talked the reluctant kaiser into permanent, peaceful retirement in Holland.
Toward some kind of popular/democratic government — or, at least the appearance of one — the generals ceded new powers to the Parliament or National Congress, led by the opposition Social Democrats.
Based on this (perhaps-often-replicated) example of Western history, this is the ‘shoe’ I would expect to see/hear drop in the near future — i.e., genuine authority in the US, convincing the ‘kaiser’ and his family (including his most trusted aides and cabinet members) into retirement on some island.
